Can criticizing the boss on Facebook get you fired?
Information may want to be free, as the old Internet adage goes--but how far does such freedom extend when it comes to criticizing your boss on social media platforms? That's the question that the National Labor Relations Board is putting before an administrative law court. NLRB lawyers are contending that a Connecticut-based ambulance service illegally fired an emergency medical technician after she criticized her supervisor on Facebook, the New York Times reports. The case could have broad implications for workers' speech rights as applied to social media. [Related: Six things you should never reveal on Facebook] According to the complaint, Dawnmarie Souza was fired after using vulgarities to ridicule her supervisor in a Facebook post. Souza also wrote, using the company's terminology for a psychiatric patient: "Love how the company allows a 17 to become a supervisor." Souza and the supervisor had clashed after the supervisor would not let a union representative help her to prepare a response to a customer's complaint about her work. The company, American Medical Response, says it has a policy that bars employees from depicting the company on Facebook and other social media sites on which they post pictures of themselves. The NLRB argues that the rule is overly broad--and that the firing of Souza violates the National Labor Relations Act, which, among other things, prohibits employers from punishing workers for discussing working conditions or unionization. The complaint notes that the comments triggered supportive responses from Souza's co-workers, as well as additional negative comments about the supervisor. "This is a fairly straightforward case under the National Labor Relations Act," a lawyer for the NLRB told the Times. "Whether it takes place on Facebook or at the water cooler, it was employees talking jointly about working conditions, in this case about their supervisor, and they have a right to do that." But American Medical Response said the firing was proper. "The employee in question was discharged based on multiple, serious complaints about her behavior," the company said in a statement. "The employee was also held accountable for negative personal attacks against a co-worker posted publicly on Facebook. The company believes that the offensive statements made against the co-workers were not concerted activity protected under federal law." An administrative law judge will begin hearing the case Jan. 25.

one colleague of mine who worked for a large retail company complained about them on facebook he was on a management development programe and was take off it for his comments on facebook and we have since been told that the company do employ colleagues to scower sites such as facebook for key words such as company names ect and that any such status' envolving the company name will go to disaplinery and could leed to dismissal. No exactly freedom of speach no is it?!

In the UK teachers in schools can be asked to resign in certain circumstances for posting on Facebook et al. Also large companies insist that employees sign an agreement not to publish anything on the net which might be harmful (broad definition) to the company.

I don't know if you're asking this as a poll or simply to know how we think of the topic. Anyway, I think you can be sued anywhere on the Web, be it Facebook or not, if you do these things: 1. Libel 2. Copyright Infringement 3. Privacy Violations 4. Harassment 5. Breach of Contract It seems that the case falls under item No.1 so I guess, there is a chance that the boss will win the case. This is my opinion though. I think, people forget proper netiquette these days like the 2nd source below.

Honestly, I think she should get fired. I think one of the biggest misconceptions about facebook is that it is private. In no way is facebook anyway similar to a water cooler. Did you know that almost everyone on facebook is connected with one another in less than 7 degrees of separation? That is what makes websites like facebook so valuable to companies for marketing. They can post something on facebook and it could spread like wild fire across the web for little or no money. The same thing can happen to an individuals wall posts in theory. Facebook should not be thought of as a private profile that only your friends can see. Sure it is a great way to keep track of your personal friends but in many ways it is not private. In all reality it is a public blog of sorts. Would it have been worse if she went out on a public news blog and made those statement? Employees need to be aware of the impact they can have for the companies they work for by making negative statements and I truly believe that if you are a business owner you should train your employees how to act when talking about there employer so you don't cause a PR nightmare like this one.

I watch the Marblehornets videos on youtube, and I joined a facebook group discussing the different characters and who they are. One of the characters is called Slenderman, and he is a very tall man dressed in a suit and tie. Where his face should be there is just blank, empty skin. He isn't real, of course. These videos are made for entertainment. But someone left a comment on that facebook page that said, "I think the Slenderman myth is based on one of several inter-dimensional beings that came through a rift in central Connecticut a few hundred years back. The rift itself is on heavily guarded land now." I thought this sounded very interesting, and I tried to google it to read more about this rift and what supposedly came out of it, but couldn't find anything. I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about it or give me some keywords or maybe even the name of the rift so I could search for it and read about it. Or even if you know any information about this and would like to share it with me that would be awesome. Thank you! *I went to this person's page to send them a message asking them about it, but they have a note on their info section saying that they won't be able to get back on facebook until September.

its possible you wont find anything about the rift, because there are still people that dont believe in paranormal occurences, and dismiss it as fantasy or psychosis.

There are many rifts and vortexes that have appeared and closed throughout the years. The Slenderman is actually based on a spirit that was said to haunt a light house in Conn. He was a tall man skeletal in shape and had a blank face. As the story goes if you saw his true face you died soon after. I am not sure how true this is but I have heard the story.

I need help with my essay?
I am writing a essay about technology. To be more specific (Video gaming and Social networking sites) I need a introduction and a conclusion... Can you please help me in any kind of way I am going to include what I have written so far in my essay Technology In today's society technology is used frequently and convenient at the tip of my fingers. I rely on technical devices for majority of everything in my life. Technology has improved over the past years and is constantly growing. Video games and Social networking sites has made a positive effect in my life. Video games are enriching in many different ways. For example, When I was in grade school. Video gaming has a wonderful and educational impact in childrens lives. Social Networking Sites are a convenient way of communication. According to Regina Lynn “Facebook, MySpace, and other social networking sites offer users a chance to keep up with friends, connect with new people, share photos, and even discuss music and politics†(83). For Instance, My sister Emily lives in Norman, Oklahoma. Facebook allows me to interact with her as far as a instant message and view her updated pictures. Please Help Soon, I am just overwhelmed!!!?
My BF said he needed time to study for his Final Exam, which he has been excluded from. Though we both thought it to be a good idea to take it to see what he has retained. The problem is, he spends most of his time playing on the internet instead of studying. Tonight I called him, because I missed him so much. I spent the day with the daughter of my Ex of 11 years. She is like my daughter and he is my best friend and family considering I have no biological family. He gets along well with my current BF and evens helps him if needed. I became upset with my bf because last night he told me I could not snuggle with him because he had to study until Tuesday, instead I found out he has been playing on the internet instead of studying. This made me feel a bit unwanted. He then became angry and blamed it all on me, saying I do not respect him. I RESPECT DIRECTNESS, LOYALTY AND HONESTY. He made a comment that hurt the feeling of my ex's daughter who is 12 years old. My bf and her spent two days together playing video games until daylight both time and she stayed at his home and he enjoyed as much or more than her. When I questioned his hurting her feelings, he said he did not care, "she is not my daughter". No she is not, but she is a 12 yo child with feelings. I am not concerned that he needs alone time, just tell the truth as to why you need it. I even let him go to bars alone when I am at my newly purchased condo (that I purchased with my ex due to financial reasons. Before the purchase I discussed this with my current bf and it is all okay with him. I love this guy, but am overwhelmed that, I am sometimes blocked from seeing his Facebook, He shows no pics of us on his FB, hides them from everyone. He only shows himself shirtless, his cat and his accomplishments. What do you think? I will go as far to say that I have seen many email between my bf and his ex of 3 years. He treated him the same. WHen his is out with friends, even one he met just days ago, I am ignored until he has time. He tells his friends negative things about me and then expects me to want to hang out with them after he tells me they do not like me, though they have never met me... He has been caught kissing guys in the bar ( 3 times)when I was back home visiting my ma. Went to a guys home at 2 am he met in the bar and said it was to make a new friend. This guy had his hand on my BF's back the whole night. He lied at first then came clean when I questioned it. I honestly believe in my heart he has never done anything more. I always want him to put himself first. This is why I help him gain his independence (own apt, own car, etc.) For the record, I do not think he has cheated. Yet his actions are not appropriate. For some odd reason he thinksI want to prevent him from finishing school, when all I ever do is want him to achieve all of his dreams and goals.

A New Hampshire state legislator resigned his office Thursday after becoming the second Democrat in as many days to speculate about Sarah Palin's death on Facebook. State Rep. Timothy Horrigan made the remarks Wednesday night in a thread discussing the Alaska plane crash that killed former Sen. Ted Stevens. I love this guy, but am overwhelmed that, I am sometimes blocked from seeing his Facebook, He shows no pics of us on his FB, hides them from everyone. He only shows himself shirtless, his cat and his accomplishments. What do you think? 21 minutes ago - 4 days left to answer. Additional Details I will go as far to say that I have seen many email between my bf and his ex of 3 years. He treated him the same. WHen his is out with friends, even one he met just days ago, I am ignored until he has time. He tells his friends negative things about me and then expects me to want to hang out with them after he tells me they do not like me, though they have never met me... He has been caught kissing guys in the bar ( 3 times)when I was back home visiting my ma. Went to a guys home at 2 am he met in the bar and said it was to make a new friend. This guy had his hand on my BF's back the whole night. He lied at first then came clean when I questioned it. I honestly believe in my heart he has never done anything more. I always want him to put himself first. This is why I help him gain his independence (own apt, own car, etc.) For the record, I do not think he has cheated. Yet his actions are not appropriate. For some odd reason he thinksI want to prevent him from finishing school, when all I ever do is want him to achieve all of his dreams and goals.

I see you've gotten yourself into a lot of drama here, Well i think your boyfriend shows a lack of sensitivity and kindness, don't you think you'd be better off with someone who is kind and warm hearted? Don't settle with something that you don't want, go for what you really want. You have feelings of love for him but i think if the feeling were so mutual then he would behave in a much more decent manner, and the fact that he hides so much from you really makes me wonder what's going on with him. I think it would be best if you left him, otherwise your going to end up many years down the line betrayed or unsatisfied. I do not like the way he treats you and how he disses you in front of his friends. It may be painful to leave someone that you've been with for such a time but its now or never, im sure there are many more, much more lovely men to be with then him.

This guy talks about respecting him and gives 0 to you. He should not be saying anything about your daughter to hurt her feelings, and saying shes not his daughter so he doesnt care is ridiculous. Your boyfriend is off kissing guys whilst your not around, do you really trust this guy? I think you should sit down and have a think about what you want out of this relationship because this guy sounds like an a**.

My BF said he needed time to study for his Final Exam, which he has been excluded from. Though we both thought it to be a good idea to take it to see what he has retained. The problem is, he spends most of his time playing on the internet instead of studying. Tonight I called him, because I missed him so much. I spent the day with the daughter of my Ex of 11 years. She is like my daughter and he is my best friend and family considering I have no biological family. He gets along well with my current BF and evens helps him if needed. I became upset with my bf because last night he told me I could not snuggle with him because he had to study until Tuesday, instead I found out he has been playing on the internet instead of studying. This made me feel a bit unwanted. He then became angry and blamed it all on me, saying I do not respect him. I RESPECT DIRECTNESS, LOYALTY AND HONESTY. He made a comment that hurt the feeling of my ex's daughter who is 12 years old. My bf and her spent two days together playing video games until daylight both time and she stayed at his home and he enjoyed as much or more than her. When I questioned his hurting her feelings, he said he did not care, "she is not my daughter". No she is not, but she is a 12 yo child with feelings. I am not concerned that he needs alone time, just tell the truth as to why you need it. I even let him go to bars alone when I am at my newly purchased condo (that I purchased with my ex due to financial reasons. Before the purchase I discussed this with my current bf and it is all okay with him.
